Plumes of smoke and an unmistakable aroma of roasted chestnuts dominate the streets of many towns and villages in Spain during the autumn season. Everywhere you go, starting from early October, you’ll encounter stalls on the streets where chestnuts are roasted and sold in paper cones made from old newspapers. It’s a true treat for enthusiasts: a cone of deliciously warm roasted chestnuts, generously sprinkled with coarse salt. Wherever you see clouds of smoke curling and feel the warmth of the fire spreading, you can find tasty roasted chestnuts for sale—this is a lovely and cozy scene. You can smell them from afar.
You can also roast the sweet chestnuts yourself. They are very healthy. Chestnuts are low in fat and consist of 50% water; they provide many minerals (phosphorus, calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, and copper) and vitamins (B1, B3, B6, and folic acid). Chestnuts are rich in carbohydrates, primarily in the form of starch and fiber, which quickly give a feeling of fullness.
Wash the chestnuts and dry them with a tea towel.
Lay each chestnut flat and cut a cross in the top.
Preheat the oven or air fryer to 200 degrees Celsius.
Place the chestnuts on a baking tray or in the basket of the air fryer with the cross facing up.
Roast the chestnuts for 10-15 minutes until done.
Let the chestnuts cool slightly before peeling them.
Together with sweet potatoes, known as ‘moniato,’ they make a fantastic dish.
